National Latino Aids Awareness Day -- October 15

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) recognizes October 15 as National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, a campaign aimed at engaging the Hispanic/Latino community in promoting HIV awareness through testing, prevention and education.  This year’s theme is “Commit to Speak”/”Comprométete a Hablar”.
MCDH offers free and confidential HIV testing and counseling for high risk individuals in 30 minutes, as well as testing for sexually transmitted infections (STI) for those at risk, for a fee.  Call 815-334-4500 for an appointment.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 200,000 Latinos have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.  The rates of new infections among Latino men were more than double that of white men. The rate of HIV infection among Latino women was nearly four times that of white women.  According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, 123 people in McHenry County are living with HIV/AIDS (51 HIV, 72 AIDS) as of December 2011.
Some steps that Latinos can take include:

  • Getting tested to find out if you are HIV positive;
  • Seek early medical care if you are HIV positive to protect yourself and your partner;
  • Protect yourself and others from HIV through safe sex practices;
  • Seek education about HIV.
The CDC states the impact of HIV on Hispanics/Latinos is not directly related to race or ethnicity, but rather to harsh realities and challenges faced by some communities, including lower awareness of HIV status, poverty, access to care, stigma, migration acculturation (the process of adopting the cultural traits or social patterns of another group) and homophobia.
Visit http://www.latinoaids.org/ to get the facts about HIV.  For more information, call MCDH at 815-334-4500.

"Waiting For Godot" Presented On MCC Stage

The Black Box Theatre at McHenry County College (MCC) will present Samuel Beckett’s absurdist masterpiece, “Waiting for Godot” at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 17, 18 and 19 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 19 and 20. Performances will be held at Woodstock North High School, 3000 Raffel Road in Woodstock.
“Waiting for Godot,”  revolves around two seemingly homeless men waiting for someone or something named Godot. Vladimir and Estragon wait near a tree on a barren stretch of road, inhabiting a drama spun from their own consciousness. The result is a comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes and nonsense, which has been interpreted as a somber summation of mankind's inexhaustible search for meaning.
The cast features Joe Rice of Woodstock, Matt Torres of  Lake in the Hills, Dave Lysen of Huntley, Shawn Tracy and Breanne McDonagh of McHenry. “Waiting for Godot” is directed by Jay Geller of Kildeer, with set design by Sue Lewis of Crystal Lake, lighting by Rick Amundsen of Woodstock, costume design by Tish Lyon of Woodstock, stage manager Tj Neveitt of McHenry, and assistant director Sandy Pieczonka of Crystal Lake.
Tickets are $10 per person. For reservations or more information, contact Jay Geller at (815) 455-8746 or jgeller@mchenry.edu. See past MCC productions and theatre course descriptions at www.mchenry.edu/theater.

New At The Raue Center

On October 7, 2013 at 7:00 pm Williams Street Repertory launches a new initiative entitled Contemporary Voices. This playwright reading series will feature the esteemed works of Lee Blessing, J.T. Rogers, Daniel Stern and more.
Sandy Shinner, former associate director of Victory Gardens has signed on to direct a staged reading of  J.T. Rogers’s “White People.” Talent for the evening will include James Knight (I Am The Machine Gunner, Hartford Stage Company and recent filmwork in Now You See Me), Alicia Regan (Sex and the City, Sopranos, Epic Rep) and Mark Mahallak (The Rocky Horror Show, Company).
J.T. Rogers is the recent recipient of the Pinter Review Prize for Drama, the American Theatre Critics Association’s Osborne Award, and the William Inge Center for the Arts’ New Voices Award. His highly acclaimed play, White People, is a controversial and darkly funny play about the lives of three ordinary Americans placed under the spot-light: Martin, a Brooklyn–born high powered attorney for a white-shoe law firm in St. Louis, MO; Mara Lynn, a housewife and former home-coming queen in Fayetteville, NC; and Alan, a young professor struggling to find his way in New York City. Through heart-wrenching confessions, they wrestle with guilt, prejudice, and the price they and their children must pay for their actions. White People is a candid, brutally honest meditation on race and language in our culture.
The Chicago Daily Herald hails White People as being “provocative, immediate and brilliant” while TimeOut New York raves about the playwright saying, “Rogers is the rarest of creatures: an American playwright with a social conscience and the desire to make damning connections between human psychology and ideology.”

Hill Road Bridge Now Open

The McHenry County Division of Transportation (MCDOT) reopened the Hill Road Bridge over the North Branch of Nippersink Creek, located just east of the Village of Richmond, in Richmond Township.
The reconstruction of this bridge was necessary due to a loss of structural integrity of several bridge deck beams and significant pile deterioration.  This $1.8 million bridge replacement project was funded 96% by federal and state bridge funds and 4% by county funds.
The McHenry County Division of Transportation apologizes for any inconvenience, and is appreciative of your patience and understanding during the construction of this project.  There is some remaining work left to be completed; periodic day time lane closures should be expected.

Eastbound Tollway Traffic Shifts Begin Next Week In Elgin--Belvidere Area

The Illinois Tollway will begin the process of returning traffic to the newly constructed eastbound side of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) between Rockford and Elgin next week as the first phase of the $2.2 billion I-90 Rebuilding and Widening Project nears completion for this construction season. In addition, eastbound traffic will be shifted Sunday night at the Marengo Toll Plaza on I-90 requiring a temporary reduction in the number of open road tolling lanes.
Eastbound traffic between I-39 in Rockford and the Elgin Toll Plaza has been traveling on the westbound side of the road since spring to accommodate the rebuilding and widening of the eastbound lanes. The westbound lanes in this segment are scheduled to be rebuilt and widened in 2014, and work on the segment of I-90 from Elgin to Chicago is scheduled for 2014-2016.
“We’ve made tremendous progress this construction season, and we’re pleased to report that we’re on schedule to complete the western section of I-90 next year,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur. “This return to normal traffic patterns allows us to prepare for the winter break in construction.”
Traffic shifts will be scheduled throughout October on I-90 to return traffic to the eastbound side in remaining sections between Rockford and Elgin. Once completed, traffic will remain in this configuration over the winter, however, work will continue in the median to prepare for the rebuilding and widening of the westbound lanes in 2014.
I-90 Mainline Traffic Shifts
Next week, traffic shifts are scheduled in a 7-mile section near Elgin and a 5-mile section near Belvidere, as well as at the Marengo Toll Plaza. Eastbound I-90 traffic will be shifted from the westbound side of the road onto new pavement on the eastbound lanes with a full right shoulder.
On the east end near Elgin, two lanes of traffic will be moved back onto the eastbound side between
Brier Hill Road and the Union Pacific Railroad overpass near Elgin. On the west end of the project near
Belvidere, two lanes of traffic will be moved back onto the eastbound side between the Union Pacific Railroad underpass and Tripp Road.
Work to shift mainline traffic is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, October 7, in both sections, reducing traffic to a single lane overnight. The lane reduction and traffic shifts will be completed by 5 a.m. on Tuesday, October 8, in advance of the morning rush hour.
Marengo Toll Plaza Traffic Shift
Eastbound traffic will also be shifted next week at the Marengo Toll Plaza, requiring a temporary reduction in the number of open road tolling lanes. The eight-week closure is necessary as work continues to rebuild and widen the eastbound lanes between Rockford and Elgin.
At 10 p.m. on Sunday, October 6, one open road tolling lane will close for the traffic shift. When work is completed by 6 a.m. on Monday, October 7, eastbound traffic at the Marengo Toll Plaza will be shifted to the right and one of two open road tolling lanes will be closed for eight weeks to provide a work zone so the left shoulder and left lane can be rebuilt.
During this time, one open road tolling lane will remain open and a temporary I-PASS Only lane will be available on the cash collection side of the toll plaza to provide an additional non-stop option for I-PASS customers. In addition, two cash lanes with toll collectors will remain in place and all lanes will accept IPASS.
Some delays are expected during peak hours and drivers are encouraged to use the I-PASS Only lane on the cash side of the plaza when traffic is heavy. In addition, depending on the destination, traffic travelling east toward Chicago and O’Hare International Airport can use I-39 to the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) as an alternate route.
Once the work on the left side of the eastbound lanes at the Marengo Toll Plaza is complete, two open road tolling lanes will be restored and construction will continue with work to rebuild the right shoulder and lane.
Work to rebuild and widen the eastbound lanes between Rockford and Elgin began this spring and will be completed by the end of the year, with the westbound lanes scheduled to be rebuilt and widened in
2014. Work to rebuild and widen the eastern section of I-90 is scheduled for 2014-2016.
When complete, I-90 will be a 21st century, state-of-the-art corridor linking Rockford to O'Hare Airport. The improved roadway will accommodate as many as 30,000 more vehicles per day and will save drivers $440 million annually due to reduced congestion and delays. The I‐90 corridor from Chicago to Rockford serves nearly 1 million travelers per day.
Work Zone Safety
A 45 mph speed limit is in effect 24/7 in all construction zones on I-90, whether or not workers are present. Drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution at all times.
Illinois State Police have zero tolerance for drivers speeding in work zones. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375. Posted signs advise drivers of a $10,000 fine and 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker.

Healthcare Documentary With Panel Discussion -- October 9

McHenry County College will host a screening of a documentary and a panel discussion on the status of the health care system in the country. “Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare” will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9 in the Luecht Conference Center at the college, located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.
The film focuses on how the health care system provides “quick fixes” rather than prevention of diseases. Award-winning filmmakers Matthew Heineman and Susan Froemke follow dramatic human stories as well as leaders fighting to transform healthcare at the highest levels of medicine, industry, government, and the U.S. military.
According to a summary of the film’s website, the film examines how the current battle over cost and access does not address the root of the problem—that the healthcare system consists of “profit-driven care rather than patient-driven care.” The summary also states that Americans spend $300 billion a year on pharmaceutical drugs—almost as much as the rest of the world combined—and our outcomes are worse compared to other parts of the world.
“We wanted to show that we can empower ourselves to be healthier, as individuals and as a country, even before we get sick,” directors Heineman and Froemke said in an interview.
The title of the film came from a speech and healthcare manifesto by Dr. Don Berwick years before he took office as the head of Medicare and Medicaid. Dr. Berwick applies the “escape fire” analogy to healthcare, exploring how our system is burning while there are solutions right in front of us. Dr. Berwick draws a parallel between the healthcare system and a forest fire that ignited in Mann Gulch, Montana in 1949.
Berwick said “….Healthcare, it’s in really bad trouble. The answer is among us. Can we please stop and think and make sense of the situation and get our way out of it?”
The event is free and open to the public. For information, contact (815) 455-8581. To view the film’s trailer, visit www.escapefiremovie.com/trailer.

Flu Shot Time!

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) joins the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in encouraging an annual flu shot for everyone 6 months and older as the best protection against influenza.  Appointments for mercury-free shots for adults and children 9 years and older can be made at 815-334-4510 (for all clinics) or online at www.mcdh.info.  The cost is $30; Medicaid and Medicare Part B accepted.
Flu clinics have been scheduled in October at the following MCDH locations:
Thurs. Oct 3
4pm-6pm
Crystal Lake – MCDH, 100 N Virginia St.
Mon. Oct 7
8:45am-11:45am
Woodstock – MCDH, 2200 N Seminary Ave.
Tues. Oct 8
3pm-6pm
Woodstock – MCDH, 2200 N Seminary Ave.
Wed. Oct 9
9:30am-12pm
Crystal Lake – MCDH, 100 N Virginia St.
Flu is a serious and contagious illness – even healthy people can get it.  As the flu season is long and unpredictable, the CDC recommends getting a flu shot before flu season begins as it takes 2 weeks for antibodies to develop to provide protection.
A flu shot protects not only you but those around you like pregnant women, young children, people with chronic health conditions (like asthma, diabetes, heart disease) and people 65 and older who are especially at risk for complications from the flu.
Simple ways to protect yourself also include covering your cough, washing your hands and staying home when sick.  For more information on protecting yourself from influenza, visit the CDC http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/preventing.htm.

McHenry County College (MCC) Student Veterans of America (SVA) and Student Life will host the Peace Paper Project from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, October 5-6 in the MCC Art Department studios, Rooms A141D and A149. The college is located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.
MCC’s Student Senate voted for a grant to support this event in collaboration with TLS Veterans of Lake and McHenry County.  The workshops will offer MCC and community veterans the opportunity to create art and tell stories about their experiences.
The Peace Paper Project uses traditional hand papermaking as a means of engaging communities in art practices that bring people together, broadcast their stories, and transform their fibers into meaningful art pieces. The project operates everywhere from private workshops to public demonstrations to promote the art of hand papermaking while adapting to the needs of each specific community. Peace Paper merges its skill set of papermaking, bookbinding, printmaking, and creative writing with the unique practices and concepts of host communities as a way of empowering collaboration.
TLS Veterans was founded in 1996, and since 2001 has owned and operated New Horizons, a center in Hebron, IL for homeless veterans who want a chance to rebuild their lives. Veterans from WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm and other conflicts have participated in TLC’s services and have gone to find employment and rejoin their families.  Graduates are encouraged to enroll in TLS-Aftercare, a program that offers ongoing support and crisis intervention within the community.  TLS also operates a resource center where veterans, military personnel and their families can address challenges related to deployments and reintegration.  Peer-to-peer mentoring, group sessions and professional counseling are available.  The center is part of a joint Lake/McHenry County initiative to engage those who have sacrificed for our country.
This event is free and open to students and the veterans’ community of McHenry County.  Art will be on display in conjunction with the Veterans Day Ceremonies on November 8 at MCC.  Registration for this free event is required and 20 spaces are available each day.  Contact mchenrycc.sva@gmail.com to register, or call (815) 455-8947.

Since taking her County Board seat representing District 2 in November, 2009, she has diligently worked to represent her constituents as well as the concerns for all the people of McHenry County.  District 2 consists of most of Crystal Lake and Lakewood, as well as a large part of LITH, and a precinct in Cary.

As a fiscal conservative Kurtz has also challenged government status quo spending of numerous capital expenditures as Kurtz states, “My goal from the very beginning has been to strategically balance the county’s  future  needs,  in  conjunction  with  the  current  needs  and  directions established by the community.  I think that is the right approach in order to champion a McHenry County that remains beautiful, productive, and economically vibrant”.
Kurtz adds, “There is still much work yet to do in order to promote government responsiveness, transparency, fiscal responsibility, and protection of the watershed and our groundwater.   That is why I will be seeking another term, and asking the people of District 2 once again for their support”.

"If the federal government should ... make a tyrannical use of its powers, the people ... must appeal to the standard they have formed, and take such measures to redress the injury done to the Constitution as the exigency may suggest and prudence justify."

Talk About Greening The Future

The public is invited to Green Drinks McHenry County on Wednesday, October 2nd from 5pm-7pm at Duke’s Alehouse & Kitchen, 110 N Main Street in Crystal Lake. Head upstairs at Duke’s for info and inspiration, business and pleasure. Come talk about “greening” the future with others. Must be 21 to purchase alcohol - non-alcoholic drinks are available, of course!
This month’s topic: Toys that are Future Friendly and Kind to the Environment
Lori McConville, Owner of Marvin’s Toy Store in downtown Crystal Lake, will be speaking about how she chooses toys for her store that meet expectations for being sensitive to the earth and friendly to our future.  That means looking for a product that is both environmentally and socially responsible.  It’s about being conscious about the life-cycle of the toy and striving to have the whole supply chain engaged in environmentally sustainable practices.
Buying a toy for a child is a special purchase.  It’s important to know that the toy meets safety standards and that the quality is there both in materials and in the play that it provides.  Beyond that, there are other layers to look at that affect the earth and people, such as packaging, shipping, production, etc.
Find out about the criteria used to select toys for an eco-conscious store and learn about the questions Lori asks when deciding to sell an item.  You will get a chance to check out some toys, and you will be asked to make some decisions yourself.  Find out how easy or difficult it can be to make smart decisions about the toys our children play with.
There will be an information table set up, and you are welcome to bring information about your green products and services each month to share. Additional parking is available at the train station.
