Holiday Lights Recycling Program

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) encourages residents to take advantage of the Holiday Lights Recycling Program offered at several area municipalities.  Residents can bring holiday light strands, rope lights, LED lights and extension cords.  Unacceptable items include garlands, wreaths and other non-recyclable materials. Nominations Sought For McHenry County Green Awards

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) invites you to submit a nomination for the 2014 McHenry County Green Awards.  The McHenry County Green Awards recognize the waste reduction, recycling and conservation efforts of businesses, institutions, organizations and residents in the County.  These programs reflect new and innovative ways to positively impact our community. Nominations should be sent to Kristy Hecke, MCDH’s Solid Waste Manager at klhecke@co.mchenry.il.us or by fax 815-334-4637.  Forms are available online at www.mcdh.info.  Deadline is December 3rd 
.
The McHenry County Green Award is a good reminder of the important role everyone has in improving the environment through waste reduction and recycling.  Entries will be considered based on environmentally sound waste reduction or recycling efforts, innovation and education.  Award winners will be selected by the Solid Waste Advisory Committee, recognized at a future McHenry County Board meeting and posted on the Department of Health’s Solid Waste webpage. One award will be chosen from each of the following categories  
·         Businesses – manufacturing, retail, offices, hotels, restaurants
·         Institutions – schools, hospitals, long term care facilities, government
·         Organizations – associations, clubs, volunteer groups
·         Individuals

Easy Nutrition On A Budget Seminar

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) will present “Easy Nutrition on a Budget” and “Cooking for One” at the Harvard Community Senior Center, 6817 Harvard Hills Road, on Monday, November 24 at 10am. The program is free and open to the public. Beverages will be provided.
 
This is the 2nd presentation in a series of health-related topics geared to older adults.  This program is made possible by a grant from the American Heart Association.  More information is available from the Senior Center by calling 815-943-2740.

Holiday Events At Colonel Palmer House

Step back in time and experience the holiday season at the Colonel Palmer House located at 660 E. Terra Cotta Ave. The Federal and Greek Revival Style home built in 1858 will be decorated in holiday splendor creating a perfect setting for Classic Christmas Bedtime Stories and a Victorian Holiday Tea.

Classic Christmas Bedtime Stories on Dec. 9,12,16 & 19th from 7-8 pm.  Cozy up in the front parlor of the Colonel Palmer House as Mrs. Claus reads Classic Christmas Bedtime Stories to children ages 2-7. Kids should wear their PJ’s and bring their favorite blanket and stuffed animal. Juice, milk and cookies will be served in the back parlor along with a surprise by Jolly St. Nick! Resident Fee: $15 Non-Resident Fee: $20

On Dec. 14th, the Colonel Palmer House hosts a Victorian Holiday Tea. Two seating’s will be offered at 12:30 pm or 3:00 pm as costumed staff serves guests a sumptuous luncheon tea. A special presentation by 4 Strings Attached, an accomplished group of youth violinists under the direction of Martin Lopez will set the mood for this annual holiday event. Resident Fee: $15 adult/$10 ages 12 & under, Non-Resident Fee: $23 adult/$15 ages 12 and under.

Lakewood Village Suggests Recycling Burned-Out Holiday Lights

Don't throw away your tangled, frayed or burned-out holiday lights this year!
In support of the Strategic Plan goal to be "green" mindful and sustainable, the Village will offer recycling of holiday lights and extension cords. A receptacle will be available at Village Hall, 2500 Lake Avenue, through January 31, 2014. Items may be dropped off during business hours,
Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Acceptable items are:
• Mini-lights (also known as Italian lights) 
• C7 lights
• C9 lights
• Rope lights, 
• LED lights
• Extension cords

Nominations Sought For 2015 MCC Distinguished Alumni Award

The Friends of McHenry County College Foundation seeks nominations for the 2015 MCC Distinguished Alumni Award to recognize MCC alumni who are making their communities a better place to live and work
.
The Distinguished Alumnus Award recognizes the accomplishments of notable McHenry County College alumni who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in their chosen profession and have made a positive impact on their community. The award winners will be recognized at the MCC Distinguished Alumni Ceremony at McHenry County College in April 2015. 
The 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients were Mary Miller, president/CEO of Miller Verchota, Inc., Judge Mary Nader of the 22nd Judicial Circuit, McHenry County and Sandra Pierce, president of Phoenix Woodworking.
“Many MCC alumni have launched successful careers and continue to make a difference in the community,” said Matt Lemke, Friends of MCC Foundation, Board of Directors president. “The Distinguished Alumni award program allows the College to celebrate the achievements of its alumni and the role that MCC has played in their successes.”
The criteria for nomination includes: former MCC student who has completed a minimum of three credit hours, achieved success of an exceptional nature within his or her chosen field or profession, and has made a positive impact on his or her community through leadership and/or volunteering. To be further considered for the award, the candidate must agree to accept the award at the Distinguished Alumni Ceremony and agree to return to campus at least once within the year to be a guest speaker and/or participate in a student engagement activity.
The deadline for nomination forms is Monday, March 2 at midnight CST.  Nominees can self-nominate or be nominated by someone else. If self-nominating, at least one letter of reference must be submitted. If available, MCC welcomes the additional submissions of up to three letters of recommendation.

Elections Coming In April

On April 7, 2015 there will be a Consolidated Election for Crystal Lake Park District Commissioner. Three seats will be up for election. The length of term is four years. Petition packets can be picked up at the Park District Administrative Office, located at One East Crystal Lake Avenue, Crystal Lake. The filing period is December 15-22, 2014. Candidates must be a resident of the Crystal Lake Park District and have resided in the District for at least one year.
