Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony - Friday November 7
McHenry County College (MCC) will host
a Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony beginning with patriotic music by the MCC
Concert Band and Chorus at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7 in the MCC Gym/Multi-purpose
Room in Building A. The College is located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.
Community and student veterans, along
with faculty, staff and guests, will gather for the program that will include
speakers, patriotic music, posting of the colors by a combined service Color
Guard, and bagpipe music. In addition to recognizing veterans, visitors will
have an opportunity to mingle and meet other veterans at a reception following
the ceremony.
“Our annual Veterans Day program is
one of the many things we do to honor our country’s military veterans,” said
Don Curfman, instructor and advisor for the Student Veterans Association at
MCC. “We also help veterans transition from the military service to college
with our student organization and our Student Veterans Resource Center.
The keynote speaker is Michael A.
Harvey Jr. LMSW, U.S. Army, retired. Harvey’s family has a combined total of
490 years of military service.
“Everything that the military service
trained me to do has served me well, so that I may be of service to others,”
Harvey said.
Harvey earned dual bachelor’s degrees
in social work and Christian studies, followed by a master’s degree in social
work from Loyola University.
Kati Beck of Marengo, president of the
Military and Student Veterans Association at MCC, will also share her thoughts
and comments during the ceremony.
The event is free and open to the
public. Refreshments will be served following the program. For more

New MCC Executive Dean Of Workforce And Community Development
McHenry County College (MCC) has named
Terri Berryman, Ph.D., as executive dean of Workforce and Community
Development. She began her role on September 15, 2014.
In her role at MCC, Berryman oversees
the areas of Continuing and Professional Education, Adult Education and the
Shah Center for Corporate Training and Workforce Development, which houses the
Illinois Small Business Development Center. She succeeds Kay Moorman, who
recently accepted a position at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
“I am excited to be a part of the
great workforce and community development organization at McHenry County
College,” Berryman said. “I look forward to creating a strategic vision for the
division that will contribute to a thriving economic environment for McHenry
County residents and businesses.”
Before joining MCC, Berryman was the
project director for the Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN) Career Pathways
grant at the College of Lake County in Grayslake. In that role, she coordinated
a Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career
Training Grant (TAACCCT) consortium grant with 17 Illinois community colleges.
The grant is focused on creating online hybrid green career degrees and
certificates throughout the state of Illinois. In addition to her work with the
IGEN Career Pathways grant, she has 15-plus years of experience in workforce
and economic development. Prior to her IGEN position, Berryman was the director
of the Lake County Workforce Development Department, and worked with workforce
development staff in the Metropolitan Chicago area to address regional workforce
and economic development needs. She has also served as the director of Career
Services for Roosevelt University and the College of Lake County. She has been
an active member in many state and regional organizations committed to
workforce and economic development.
In her role at MCC, Berryman reports
directly to Tony Miksa, Ed.D., vice president of Academic and Student Affairs.
“I am thrilled to have Terri on our
staff,” Miksa said. “Her past experience in workforce development will be
especially valuable to MCC. I look forward to her continuing the excellent work
of our Workforce and Community Development Division.”
Berryman earned her doctorate in
Higher Education from Loyola University in Chicago, her Master of Arts in Human
Resource Management from Truman State University and a Bachelor of Science in
business administration from Western Kentucky University. She lives in Gurnee.

All In The Family: Violence and Bullying In The Home, School and Community
The 22nd Judicial Circuit Family
Violence Coordinating Council in cooperation with McHenry County College (MCC)
will host “All in the Family: Violence and Bullying in the Home, School and
Community,” a symposium from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29. The
event begins with a continental breakfast at 7:45 a.m. and will take place in
the Luecht Conference Center at the college, located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in
Crystal Lake.
The program aims to bring a
multi-disciplinary approach to educating participants about violence and
bullying. Participants will explore issues related to bullying, including the
relationship between family dynamics and bullying, the role of technology in
bullying, schools’ and parents’ response to bullying and the effect of
substance abuse in domestic violence and bullying.
The keynote speaker is Gail
Sullivan, chairperson of the School of Justice at Alta Colleges. She is a
certified trainer for Illinois Law Enforcement and Training Standards Board.
She will present “No More Bull: Straight Talk About Bullying.”
Discussions on substance use and
bullying and violence and the incidence of gangs in McHenry County will also be
featured. Other symposium highlights will include local school administrators
speaking on the schools response to bullying, a local police sergeant’s
presentation on cyber bullying. Two other session topics include Psyche of a
Bully and Alcohol & Domestic Violence: is there a relationship to bullying?
The event is intended for educators,
school personnel, social workers, judges, victim advocates, law enforcement,
including student resource officers, municipal officials, clergy, counselors,
healthcare providers, probation officers and youth leaders.
This program is sponsored by the
McHenry County Substance Abuse Coalition Drug Free Communities Grant, the
McHenry County Regional Office of Education, Rosecrance Health Network, Pioneer
Center for Human Services, and McHenry County College.
Cost is $15, which includes

New McHenry County Public Health Administrator
The McHenry County Board of Health
announces that Michael Hill will be the new Public Health Administrator for the
McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH), effective October 6. He
replaces Patrick M. McNulty who retired on May 30, 2014 after serving 35 years
with the Department of Health.
Hill was previously employed as the
first Executive Director of the Paso del Norte Health Information Exchange (PdN
HIE), a nonprofit corporation founded by local healthcare leaders to develop a
platform for the electronic exchange of healthcare data among providers in El
Paso County, Texas and surrounding regions. Earlier positions include
that of Chief Executive Officer of the Texas Association of Local Health
Officials; Public Health Director for the City of El Paso, Texas; Director of
Disease Control and Prevention at San Joaquin County Public Health Services,
Stockton, California; and County Health Officer for Okeechobee County Health
Department in Okeechobee, Florida.
Hill has Master degrees in Public
Health and Public Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Biology; he is
working to complete his Doctorate in Health Administration.
According to its 2013 annual report, MCDH
employs a staff of 134 FTE at locations in Woodstock and Crystal Lake for its
four divisions (Administration, Animal Control, Environmental and
Nursing). It has an operating budget of about $7 million. For more
