Words Of Wisdom

"We are firmly convinced, and we act on that conviction, that with nations as with individuals our interests soundly calculated will ever be found inseparable from our moral duties, and history bears witness to the fact that a just nation is trusted on its word when recourse is had to armaments and wars to bridle others."

Human Face Of Climate Change --Film Shown At MCC

On Monday, October 29, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County will present the documentary "Sun Come Up" at McHenry County College’s Luecht Conference Center, 8900 US Hwy 14, Crystal Lake, IL. The screening is free and open to the public. (donations to help cover costs are happily accepted). Doors open at 6:30pm, movie starts at 7pm.

"
Sun Come Up is an Academy Award® nominated film that shows the human face of climate change. The film follows the relocation of the Carteret Islanders, a community living on a remote island chain in the South Pacific Ocean, and now, some of the world’s first environmental refugees. When climate change threatens their survival, the islanders face a painful decision. They must leave their ancestral land in search of a new place to call home. Sun Come Up follows a group of young islanders as they search for land and build relationships in war-torn Bougainville, 50 miles across the open ocean.”

A question/answer discussion will follow, led by Rick Johnson and Bill Donato.

This event is co-sponsored by Environmental Defenders of McHenry County,
McHenry County Transition Group, MCC's Down to Earth Club, and the Green Club at Prairie Ridge High School, and hosted by MCC Sustainability Center.

ATTENTION VOTERS!

If you suddenly discovered you are not registered to vote, there is still time to handle that important civic duty. The deadline for this necessary action was October 9.

Katherine C. Schultz, McHenry County Clerk, notes that a state law allows a “Grace Period” for people to register to vote between October 10 and November 3 for the upcoming November 6 General Election.

Individuals may register in person during normal office hours at the County Clerk’s Office, County Administration Building, 667 Ware Road, Room 207, Woodstock.

However, there is a caveat—people registering to vote at this time must vote in the County Clerk’s office at the same time... They may not vote in their designated precinct.

The Clerk’s office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30p.m.

Eligibility requires a person to be a US citizen, 18 years old by Election Day, and a resident of the precinct for at least 30 days prior to Election Day. Two (2) forms of ID are necessary, both with the voter’s name and one (1) with their current address.

For more information about the grace period, contact the County Clerk’s office at 815-334-4242.

Rakow Road Work Nearing Completion

Because of the varied activities, including asphalt paving, traffic signal installation, final landscaping and pavement markings, expect traffic delays throughout the entire project over the next few weeks as the work is finished
.
We continue to be on pace to have the entire roadway open to traffic prior to the project completion date of November 30th.  Please be alert as you drive through the project since many different work tasks are being performed simultaneously.

As a reminder, a Rededication of Rakow Road will be held Tuesday, October 30th at the Crossroads of Crystal Lake.  Please visit the
Press Releases page or click here to see the invitation and more details.  Thank you for your continued patience!

Another Party Heard

An Open Letter to the
Commission on Presidential Debates
Dear Members of the Commission:

On behalf of the 6% of likely voters nationwide who plan to vote for the Libertarian Presidential Ticket of Governor Gary Johnson and Judge Jim Gray this November 6th (Polled 9/21 by Princeton Survey Research International),

On behalf of the 2% to 10.6% of likely voters polled in the razor-close Tipping Point States of New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Nevada, and Colorado -- who plan to vote for Libertarian Presidential candidate, 2-Term Governor Gary Johnson,

On behalf of the 26,192 individuals (as of 10/1/12) who signed the petition for you to include Libertarian Presidential candidate, Governor Gary Johnson in the Presidential Debates with Democratic Presidential candidate, President Barack Obama and Republican Presidential candidate, Governor Mitt Romney,

2-Term Governor Gary Johnson is Qualified to be Included in these Presidential Debates

Successful entrepreneur, business executive and leader who created 1,000 private sector jobs.
Two-term governor. Re-elected by voters of New Mexico. Neither Mitt Romney nor Barack Obama has been re-elected.

Has 8 years chief executive experience in government -- as much as Mitt Romney and Barack Obama combined.
As governor, he vetoed over 750 unnecessary bills - more than all other governors combined. Only two vetoes were overridden. This saved taxpayers billions of dollars.
Is already on the ballot in 48 states plus D.C. and is challenging the last two states for ballot access in federal court.
25-Year Superior Court Judge Jim Gray is Qualified to be Included in the Vice-Presidential Debate:
Juris Doctor, USC
Peace Corps Volunteer in Costa Rica
JAG Defense Attorney in the US Navy
25-year California Superior Court Judge
Champions the cause of legalizing marijuana, re-classifying it the same as wine and beer
Relevant: Libertarian Presidential Candidate Governor Gary Johnson’s votes in one or more of the key Tipping Point States – New Hampshire(4), Virginia(13), North Carolina(15), Florida(29), Ohio(18), Iowa(6), Nevada(6), and Colorado(9) – could shift as many as 100 Electoral Votes this November 6th …and could determine the outcome of the 2012 Presidential Election.

Shouldn’t the voters in these 8 Tipping Point states get the opportunity to compare and contrast Libertarian Presidential candidate Governor Gary Johnson against the republican and Democratic Presidential candidates in the nationally-televised Presidential debates – BEFORE they decide who to vote for?

Most Americans need an Electron Microscope to find real differences between most actions and policies of President Obama and Governor Romney.

Excluding Libertarian Presidential candidate Governor Gary Johnson from the Presidential Debates guarantees that real differences don’t get debated. For example:

Federal Spending:
Both Obama and Romney will add $1.2 Trillion more to the federal debt in their first year alone. President Gary Johnson will cut spending in Year One by 43% to balance the budget.

Bailouts:
Obama and Romney supported bailouts for banks, corporations, foreign governments and state governments. President Gary Johnson will veto all bailouts.

Medical Insurance:
Obama will preserve, protect and expand Obamacare. Romney will replace it with Romneycare. President Gary Johnson will repeal Obamacare completely and return medical choices to families and doctors.

Foreign Intervention:
Romney and Obama will keep 550,000 U.S. troops stationed in foreign countries and drag on the war in Afghanistan. President Gary Johnson will radically draw down U.S. troops in foreign countries and immediately bring our troops home from Afghanistan.

Drug War:
Obama and Romney will continue the failed Marijuana Prohibition.
President Gary Johnson will end the Prohibition and free the many who suffer from cancer, AIDS, glaucoma, migraines, and other serious disease to seek relief from pain and disability.

What if you put on a Presidential Debate and nobody watches? That’s the direction you’re headed by excluding qualified candidates like 2-Term Governor Gary Johnson.

10 million to 20 million fewer Americans will watch your 2012 debates than the 2008 debates – UNLESS you include the other qualified Presidential candidate, Libertarian 2-Term New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson. Why? His viewpoint and proposals are dramatically different from Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. He attracts a different segment of American voters. He brings in new viewers to the debates.

Do the right thing, the good thing, the smart thing:
Invite and include Libertarian Presidential candidate Governor Gary Johnson and Vice-Presidential candidate Judge Jim Gray in the 2012 Debates.
Yours for open debates and elections,
Geoffrey J. Neale                                             Carla Howell

Why We Must Be Our Own Government

By Laura Stein (about the author)
For over a decade now, it has taken courage simply to follow events in the public sphere. One after another, the dikes we had built as limits to the harm the most powerful could inflict on ordinary people have been overtopped as if they were merely quaint, decorative borders.

The state law requires that a registered voter show valid photo identification before voting early.
Voters casting an early ballot must display a current driver’s license, a state-issued ID card or another government-issued ID with a photograph.

Any voter who requests an “Early Ballot” or an “In Person Absentee Ballot” MAY NOT go to the polls on Election Day and revoke the ballot he originally requested.
The law prohibits any voter who has been issued an “In Person Absentee Ballot” or “Early Ballot” from appearing at his precinct polling place and requesting another ballot.

For more information about early voting or voting locations, contact the McHenry County Clerk’s office at 815-334-4242.

Words Of Wisdom

"Let us recollect that peace or war will not always be left to our option; that however moderate or unambitious we may be, we cannot count upon the moderation, or hope to extinguish the ambition of others."

Words Of Wisdom

"The state governments have a full superintendence and control over the immense mass of local interests of their respective states, which connect themselves with the feelings, the affections, the municipal institutions, and the internal arrangements of the whole population. They possess, too, the immediate administration of justice in all cases, civil and criminal, which concern the property, personal rights, and peaceful pursuits of their own citizens."
