Recycling Drive Slated Saturday

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County (EDMC) will again conduct a recycling drive on Saturday, June 13^th from 9a.m. until noon. They will be in front of the Soil & Water Conservation District building at 2222 S. Dean Street, just south of Route 14, in Woodstock. The Defenders recycle materials that are not collected in curbside recycling but would be harmful to the environment if put in a landfill.  It costs them to recycle these unusual items and therefore monetary donations of any size would be appreciated from everyone who brings materials to the drive. 

EDMC will take household batteries (alkaline & rechargeable), car batteries, fluorescent tubes, clean Styrofoam™, VHS & Cassette tapes, CDs, DVDs, packing peanuts and re-usable, unpopped bubble wrap. Electronics, such as computers, televisions, phones, printers, clean microwaves, and electronic toys, are accepted. TVs and computer monitors will be accepted for a donation of $10-$35. (Become a new member of EDMC at the recycling drive, at the Basic or higher level, and get two coupons to recycle a television or monitor for FREE!)

USAgain Clothes Collection System (http://www.usagain.com) will be providing a truck at each EDMC drive to accept any kind of cloth items—clothing, linens, or just plain rags, clean and bagged.  They will also accept shoes, tied together by their laces and placed in the bag. 

There are additional drop off sites for electronics:  Algonquin Township Road District 3702 US Hwy 14, Crystal Lake, 847-639-2700 X6, Computer Recycling Center in Crystal Lake (computers only) 815-455-6300 (call for information) and Lakewood's electronics drop-off site at 6570 Haligus Road, south of Ballard Rd. Also, Styrofoam can be dropped off any time at the Lakewood Village Hall or the Lakewood Public Works building on Haligus Road.

Green Wednesday Coming Next Week

In McHenry County, the first Wednesday of each month is Green Wednesday!

The public is invited to McHenry County Green Drinks on June 3rd, 2015, from 5pm - 7pm, at Duke’s Alehouse & Kitchen, 110 N. Main St. in Crystal Lake, from 5pm-7pm. Additional parking is available at the train station.

Come and explore biking in McHenry County. Topics will include: Navigating around local communities on a bicycle; easy, inexpensive ways to upgrade older bicycles; tips for maintaining your bike; upcoming bike events; local bike trails and more! Presenters are Bob Olsen, owner of Wheel Werks, and Tim Heil, owner of Ski and Bike, both in Crystal Lake.

Donations Sought For Spring Garage Sale

In preparation for their annual spring garage sale, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County will be taking donations of gently used items on Saturday, May 9th, and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, May 11-13, from 10 am until 3 pm, at the Algonquin Township Road District garage, 3702 U.S. Route 14, between Crystal Lake and Cary (drive back to the last beige garage on the right).

What type of things will be accepted? Just about anything that is re-sellable, with a few exceptions: small appliances & electronics must be in working order, no monitors or TVs, no clothes, no baby carriers or cribs, no large appliances or upholstered furniture. “The Defenders have been involved with diverting things from the landfills for 45 years, and doing a garage sale is a form of recycling. Buying second hand items instead of new ones keeps things out of the landfills, saves you money, and supports a McHenry County non-profit,” said EDMC’s fund raising committee.

Sale dates for the garage sale are Thursday-Saturday, May 14-16 from 9am until 4pm.

Algonquin Talks Trash April 30 For Small To Medium Sized Businesses

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County and Teagen Andrews Commercial Recycling Program Advocate from Ecossential Solutions Inc. are hosting Algonquin Talks Trash, a community event on the benefits of small business recycling.

 

 Algonquin Talks Trash is scheduled for April 30, 2015 from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Ganek Municipal Center 2200 Harnish Drive, Algonquin 60102. 

 The event will highlight strategies to help small- to medium-sized businesses save money with environmentally sound waste management practices. Recycling and reusing materials in a business is an easy way for business owners to cut waste management costs while benefiting the environment.
 

The branding company Landor Associates found that, “77% of consumers say it is important for companies to be socially responsible.” This social responsibility includes the company’s environmental impacts and the steps taken to minimize environmentally harmful operations
.
The event is open to all businesses and residents of Algonquin and the surrounding communities.  We will also be joined by Algonquin city officials and waste haulers for a wide-range of dialogue

What else is  in store: A review resources available to cut waste management costs for small- to medium-sized businesses, interaction time with Waste Management and Groot representatives regarding the actual costs of business recycling, community discussions on the benefits of commercial recycling, networking while enjoying food and beverages, free entry ticket to the Algonquin Small Business Raffle per attendee.

Small business owners interested in starting a recycling program will be provided with actionable information such as the Defenders’ Small Business Recycling Pamphlet and opportunities for Defenders’ business memberships. Business owners can also talk to a Sustainability Consultant from Ecossential Solutions Inc. for additional information on the pros and cons of commercial recycling.

Environmental Studies Scholarship Offered

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County is offering an Entering College scholarship of $1,000 to an outstanding high school senior planning to pursue a career directly related to environmental studies. To be eligible, the applicant must reside in and attend high school in McHenry County, have a respectable GPA, two letters of recommendation, plan to attend an accredited college or university, and complete an application which is available online, along with more information, at http://mcdef.org/what-we-do/environmental-scholarship. The application and accompanying documents are due in the EDMC office no later than April 24, 2015.

The Ethics of Fracking -- Film Screening

Please join The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, with co-sponsors the League of Women Voters and Citizens Climate Lobby, and host the Sustainability Institute of McHenry County College, for a screening of The Ethics of Fracking on Tuesday, March 31, 7pm at Luecht Conference Center at MCC, 8900 US Hwy 14, Crystal Lake 60014. 

Explore the spiritual, medical, educational, scientific and political points of view of natural gas extraction, also known as fracking. The documentary, The Ethics of Fracking, also looks at the advertising relied upon by the natural gas industry.Panel presentation to follow, including a firsthand account of a “fracked” property.

Arts And Crafts Contest Using Recycled Materials

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County (EDMC) is again sponsoring an arts and crafts contest utilizing recycled materials. Entries will be displayed at the Defenders’ booth at the McHenry County Fair, July 30 through August 3, 2014.

In conjunction with the unveiling of EDMC’s BYOBag (Bring Your Own Bag) McHenry County logo and county initiative, this year’s theme centers around bags.

Create an original piece of decorative or functional art re-using old plastic bags.  Tape and glue should be kept to a minimum. Surface decoration is encouraged.

The two age categories are for students and for adults 18 and over.

 Each piece must be accompanied by a 3X5 card containing this information:

• Artist’s name
• Contact telephone and address
• Age if artist is a student; otherwise the word “Adult”
• Name of piece
• Description of piece

Judging will be based on the use of recyclable items with respect to

• Aesthetics
• Creativity
• Utility

A small prize and certificate will be awarded, and winners will be featured on the Defenders’ website and in the quarterly newsletter.

Artwork must be submitted by Thursday, July 24, 2014 to the Environmental Defenders office, 110 South Johnson Street, Suite 106 , Woodstock , IL and must be picked up from the office by August 11th.

Winning pieces will be designated with ribbons and winners notified by the start of the fair.

Green Spot Used Bookstore Extended Bag Sale

Due to the snowy weather last Saturday, The Green Spot Used Bookstore is extending its bag sale until Saturday, December 21.

Fill a plastic bag with hardcover and paperback books and CDs for $3 or a paper bag for $5.  Special pricing applies only to the sale items located in the lobby. 

Hours are Tuesday - Friday 11:00am until 4:00pm and Saturday 11:00am - 3:00pm.

Make A Difference-Help Clean Creek Branch Saturday

On Saturday, October 26, 2013, members of the public are invited to “make a difference” by cleaning up a branch of Sleepy Hollow Creek as part of the national Make a Difference Day event.  This stream cleanup will be jointly sponsored by the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County and the Silver and Sleepy Hollow Creeks Watershed Coalition.  The goal for the day will be to protect the water quality in Sleepy Hollow Creek by removing trash from the stream and the surrounding area.

The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at noon. Volunteers are asked to wear work clothes, gloves, and boots and to park in the parking lot for the Prairie Trail on Hillside Road on the north side of Crystal Lake.  All necessary equipment as well as water and snacks will be provided.  If you have any questions about this event, please contact Nancy Schietzelt at 815-356-1710.  Come help us make a positive difference in our environment and enjoy some time outdoors!

Book Sale Preview This Evening

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County are holding their annual Big Fall Book Sale at the Algonquin Township Road District garage, 3702 U.S. Route 14, between Crystal Lake and Cary (drive straight back to the last garage on the right).

There is an amazing variety of books and music – everything from kids’ books to popular fiction, science to biography, CDs to vinyl record albums, and everything in between!

Friday, Sept 20: 5pm-8pm $10 admission fee

Saturday, Sept 21: 8am-4pm

Monday-Saturday, Sept 23 through Oct 5: 10 am– 4 pm (closed Sundays)

There will be a Preview Sale on the evening of Friday, September 20th from 5pm-8pm. There is a $10 entry fee, allowing participants first choice of the books.

At the McHenry collection, the Defenders will accept and pay for aluminum cans. 

EDMC recycling drives are held on the second Saturday of each month, alternating between McHenry in odd-numbered months and Woodstock in even-numbered months.  Area residents may drive up and drop off their recyclables with Defenders’ volunteers, who help to unload and sort the materials.

Recycling Collection Of Electronics, Batteries, Styrofoam Saturday

On Saturday, August 10th, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County will conduct a recycling collection for fluorescent tubes, Styrofoam™, electronics, and batteries from 9 a.m. until noon at the Farm Bureau parking lot, 1102 McConnell Road, in Woodstock. They continue to collect certain items which are not usually accepted by curbside programs, and which would be harmful to the environment if put in a landfill.

The Defenders’ Recycling Drive accepts household batteries, car batteries, lithium and button batteries. The Defenders also collect fluorescent tubes, clean Styrofoam™, VHS & Cassette tapes, CDs, DVDs, packing peanuts and re-usable, unpopped bubble wrap. Coming -- Recycled Art Contest

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County will again be sponsoring a recycled art contest, designed to encourage practical and aesthetic use of used materials. Participants are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild and have fun. Create a functional or purely artistic item from materials that have been used before. The possibilities are endless!

Finalists will be displayed at the Defenders booth at the McHenry County Fair, July 31 thru August 4, 2013

• Create an original piece of decorative or functional art using re-purposed items or materials.
• All pieces must be made of reused and/or recycled products, meaning the materials must have been used before becoming part of the artwork.  Tape and glue should be kept to a minimum. Paint and/or surface decoration is encouraged.
• The two age categories are for students and for adults 18 and over.
• Each piece must be accompanied by a 3X5 card containing this information:
• Artist’s name
• Contact telephone and address
• Age if artist is a student; otherwise the word “Adult”
• Name of piece
• Description of piece
• Judging will be based on the use of reclaimed/ recycled items with respect to
• Aesthetics
• Creativity
• Utility

Small prizes and/or certificates will be awarded, and winners will be featured on the Defenders’ website and in the quarterly newsletter.

 Artwork must be submitted by Friday, July 26, 2013 to the Environmental Defenders office, 110 South Johnson Street, Suite 106, Woodstock, IL. 

Winning pieces will be designated with ribbons and winners notified by the start of the fair. 

After the fair, artists must pick up their artwork from the Defenders Office by August 8th.
