Real Estate Classes At McHenry County College

Are you interested in helping people make significant life-changing choices? If you are, becoming a real estate agent may be just the kind of career for you for you.  McHenry County College's Workforce and Community Development Department is offering a Real Estate Pre-licensing program that meets from       6-9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from Aug. 20 through Nov. 12 in Room C104. The college is located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.

Anyone interested in completing this program must take the required two courses, including the Real Estate Sales Broker Pre-License, which satisfies 75 hours of the 90 hours of instruction required and the Real Estate Broker Pre-License Interactive course, which satisfies 15 of the 90 hours required by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to become a real estate broker. Successful completion of this set of classes, including the required coursework, allows for students to sit for the Illinois Real Estate Broker Examination.

Find A Little Peace

Explore a peaceful state of mind and body using ancient Tibetan singing bowls in calming, restorative classes offered by McHenry County College’s Continuing Education Department.

In the Tibetan Singing Bowls: Ancient Instrument of Healing and Peace class, participants can enjoy a hands-on experience of the sound and vibration of the bowls and learn why they have become internationally recognized as potent tools for healing. Participants will also be treated to a restorative sound massage. Those who like to lie down (recommended), bring a mat, blanket, pillows and a bottle of water. Or participants may sit in a chair if they prefer. Class takes place from 7-9 p.m. Friday, August 9 in Room C106. Cost is $20.  Use course ID: NHE S02 008 when registering.

For an interactive sound experience, the Tibetan Singing Bowls: Healing Sound Circle class offers participants to sit on chairs in a circle, learn to play the Tibetan Singing Bowls and learn "sounding" (a very simple yet profound vocal practice that does not require singing ability). The sound/vibration of the bowls and one’s voice creates an inner vibration that enhances the body's natural healing ability. Participants will leave feeling refreshed, restored and empowered. Bring a bottle of water to class. Class takes place from 7-9 p.m. in Room C106 on Friday, August 16. Cost is $20. Use course ID: NHE S03 008 when registering.

Checking On Feathered Ones

Children in the Monday, Wednesday, Friday four-year-old preschool class from the Children’s Learning Center at McHenry County College look at newly-hatched chicks in an incubator in their classroom. The children counted down the 21 incubation days before the eggs hatched on April 30. The eggs came from the University of Illinois Extension of McHenry County. Gift Ideas From MCC

Looking for a holiday gift or stocking stuffer for under $10? The McHenry County College Staff Council is selling “Recipes for the Heart from the Heart,” a designer-original cookbook featuring more than 100 tried and true favorites from MCC employees.

Proceeds from the cookbooks will go toward student scholarships. The majority of the recipes have been modified to be healthier, except for a decadent desserts section, which contains delicious recipes for anyone to eat in moderation.

Cost is $9.95 with a discounted price of two cookbooks for $18. Cookbooks are available through Dec. 21 in the MCC Bookstore or in the Professional Development Office, Room A210.

The cookbooks will be available with free gift wrapping from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 10 and 11 in the hallway outside the cafeteria.

Career With A Bright Future

Get started on the path to a high tech career with a bright future. For those looking for a career with excellent job outlook, great pay and positive growth potential, the path to becoming a CNC Machinist may be just the right choice. McHenry County College is now offering machining and Computer Numeric Control (CNC) courses as a part of the Manufacturing Design Technology program.

The Introduction to Machining and CNC course begins Jan. 23, 2012 and ends April 16, 2012. Classes will be held at Woodstock High School, 501 W. South Street in Woodstock, from 5-7:40 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. 

Coursework combines hands-on skills training using state-of-the-art machines with a comprehensive knowledge base. The second machining course, Advanced CNC, offers continued study in programming and running machining centers leading to the National Institute for Metalworking Skills Certification. 

Space is limited and entry into the program requires an orientation with the MCC Department Chair of Applied Technologies.

Pottery Sale By McHenry County College Students

McHenry County College ceramics students will host a Student Pottery Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6 in the commons area in Building B at the college, 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Ryan Long Memorial Scholarship Award fund. The fund was established in 1994 for art students in memory of Ryan Long who was 12 when he died in 1993. His mother, Joann Long, a ceramic artist, established the award in his name as he was interested in ceramics.

“The sale features one-of-a-kind ceramic art that makes great Christmas gifts, teacher appreciation gifts or unique gifts for your loved ones,” said Trish Vollkommer, MCC ceramics student.

The event is free and is open to the public

Kim "Hoss" Johnson Retires As McHenry County College Head Baseball Coach

Johnson held the longest coaching tenure in the history of MCC baseball, serving a total of 14 years, with two separate stints in the position, from 1992-1996 and again from 2001-2011.

His 1996 MCC squad won the prestigious NJCAA Region 4 title and the Skyway Conference championship, bringing the Scots to within one win of a Midwest District Championship and a trip to the NJCAA World Series.

That year, Johnson was named the NJCAA Region 4 Coach of the Year. Under Coach Johnson’s expert tutelage, numerous individual players earned NJCAA All-American honors, while others, such as Tony Bacci (NJCAA Region 4 and Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Halls of Fame), went on to have successful professional baseball careers. Other Johnson protégés have gone on to successful college and professional careers in many fields, including coaching.

Johnson completed 20 years of head coaching at the collegiate level, reaching the significant 500 career-wins plateau, in April, 2011.  During his illustrious coaching career, he coached 37 players who signed professional baseball contracts, along with developing 10 NJCAA All-Americans, seven at MCC. In July 2011,

Johnson was inducted into the Continental Amateur Baseball Assn. (CABA) Hall of Fame. He has also been a featured speaker at both the Illinois and Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Conventions. His other coaching stints and baseball involvements included: Major League Baseball scout for the Texas Rangers, professional baseball pitching coach with the Cook County Cheetahs and international travel team coach, taking teams to places like Japan, Germany, Colombia and Mexico.

“Hoss is a true educator and a fine developer of young men,” said Reynolds. “He has exemplary character, is responsible for transforming lives, providing a quality experience and has always been genuinely concerned with seeing all student-athletes grow and succeed academically, personally and athletically. He will be missed.”

Monthly Business Networking Set Friday

A monthly breakfast series "Start@Shah" is held on the third Friday of each month. The time is 7:30 to 9:00 am and the location is the Shah Center, 4100 W. Shamrock Lane, McHenry.

The series focus is on issues relevant for today's leaders. The July 16 topic, “Networking for Enhanced Collaboration” will highlight how today’s jobs are more complex and demanding, which increases the need for information and expertise from diverse contacts across and outside the organization. This Developmental Dimensions International (DDI) overview demonstrates how building business networks and enhancing collaboration across the organization contributes to a company’s success.

All are welcome to join the Shah Center team for an hour of insightful and interactive training, great networking opportunities and a hearty breakfast. Cost for each event is $35. MCC Board of Trustees May Appoint President This Evening

    A Committee of the Whole for McHenry County College Board of Trustees is scheduled for 5:30 pm this afternoon in the Board Room of the College, 8900 US Highway 14, Crystal Lake.
A number of committee reports are scheduled including Strategic Planning, Infrastructure Upgrade, FY 2011 Budget, Audit, Finance, and Policy.
    Also to be considered is the Presidential Search following meetings with the public by three finalist candidates.
The Regular Board Meeting follows at 7:00 pm. A highlight of this meeting is a presentation by the Forensics Team.
    Other items to be considered include those dealing with personnel adjustments for Fall, Spring and Summer, Eliminated and New positions, Salaries, all considered in a consent agenda, unless an item is requested to be removed for discussion. Also being considered are a number of items involving IT infrastructure improvements.
