MCC Second Sunday Concert January 10

McHenry  County  College’s  popular  Second  Sunday  concert season  continues  at 3 p.m. 

Jan. 10, 2016 when folksingers February Sky return with their multi-instrumental professional folk act. The performance will be in the Luecht Conference Center at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.

 

February Sky, of Trout Lake, Michigan, features traditional singer and Celtic guitarist Phil Cooper with songwriter and singer Susan Urban.  Their combined talents on guitar, Cooper sings and plays his own arrangements of traditional songs and tunes on six string guitar and cittern, and he also interprets a number of carefully chosen songs from the best of modern folk song writers. Susan Urban is a writer of story songs and humorous "slice of life" songs.  She accompanies her singing on guitar, six string banjo, mountain dulcimer, and hand percussion instruments.  Also featured will be Joe Wadz on mandolin and fiddle.

February Sky presents a combination of old and new songs addressing the widest possible range of human experience, complete with vocal harmony, intricate instrumentation and thoughtful stagecraft.

Real Estate Pre-licensing Program At MCC

McHenry County College's Workforce and Community Development Department is offering a Real Estate Pre-licensing program from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Aug. 19 through Nov. 11 in Room A119 at MCC.

This program is listed as two courses, which must be taken together: Real Estate Sales Broker Pre-License Topics and Real Estate Broker Pre-License Interactive. The Real Estate Sales Broker Pre-License Topics course is a blended home study course, which satisfies 75 hours of the 90 hours of instruction required by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) to become a real estate broker. This course is usually offered concurrently or consecutively with the Real Estate Broker Pre-License Interactive course. This course includes a study of the broad field of real estate with an emphasis on license law, real property, agency structure, buyer and seller relationships and counseling, Illinois law, Federal law, marketing and advertising, market analysis and appraisal, financing and contract knowledge, independent contractor/employee agreements and occupational disciplines.

In the Real Estate Broker Pre-License Interactive course, students will satisfy 15 hours of the 90 hours of instruction required by the IDFPR to become a real estate broker. Depending on how the class is presented, it could be included in the overall start and end dates of the topics class or it could be held consecutively to the topics class. The course includes role play, case study examples, demonstration examples, and “what if” situational examples in such areas as listing presentation, agreement and disclosure, writing purchase agreements, market analysis, seller net sheets, confronting fair housing violations/seller or buyer, distressed property issues, antitrust scenarios, and inspection/repair issues. The Illinois State Licensing Act will also be covered. 

These courses are IDFPR approved and their regulations require students attend all sessions. Successful completion of this set of classes, the Broker Pre-license Topics class and the Broker Pre-License Interactive class, including the required coursework, allows for students to sit for the Illinois Real Estate Broker Examination; students must be at least 21 and a high school graduate/GED.  For complete Illinois requirements, see www.idfpr.com.

Take Back The Night At MCC Thursday

The Student Peace Action Network of McHenry County College will sponsor its fifth annual Take Back the Night event from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday April 30 in the Luecht Conference Center, in adjacent hallways and B 167.

The event begins with a Resource Fair and a presentation of the Clothesline Project, featuring a collection of t-shirts decorated by sexual assault and abuse survivors to express that they have endured. In addition, guest speakers will talk on a variety of topics, including Title IX, sexual violence, sex trafficking, legal options for victims, healing and building healthy relationships. This will be followed by a march outside around the campus. The event will conclude with a vigil around a fire pit by the peace pole on the patio outside of the cafeteria.

MCC was selected by the national organization of Take Back the Night to be one of the 10 Points of Light, which features 10 schools throughout the U.S. who will host individual vigils at the same time. The vigils aim to show support of survivors and unite efforts to end sexual violence of all types.

New MCC Executive Dean Of Workforce And Community Development

McHenry County College (MCC) has named Terri Berryman, Ph.D., as executive dean of Workforce and Community Development. She began her role on September 15, 2014.

In her role at MCC, Berryman oversees the areas of Continuing and Professional Education, Adult Education and the Shah Center for Corporate Training and Workforce Development, which houses the Illinois Small Business Development Center. She succeeds Kay Moorman, who recently accepted a position at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

“I am excited to be a part of the great workforce and community development organization at McHenry County College,” Berryman said. “I look forward to creating a strategic vision for the division that will contribute to a thriving economic environment for McHenry County residents and businesses.”  

Before joining MCC, Berryman was the project director for the Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN) Career Pathways grant at the College of Lake County in Grayslake. In that role, she coordinated a Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant (TAACCCT) consortium grant with 17 Illinois community colleges. The grant is focused on creating online hybrid green career degrees and certificates throughout the state of Illinois. In addition to her work with the IGEN Career Pathways grant, she has 15-plus years of experience in workforce and economic development. Prior to her IGEN position, Berryman was the director of the Lake County Workforce Development Department, and worked with workforce development staff in the Metropolitan Chicago area to address regional workforce and economic development needs. She has also served as the director of Career Services for Roosevelt University and the College of Lake County. She has been an active member in many state and regional organizations committed to workforce and economic development.

In her role at MCC, Berryman reports directly to Tony Miksa, Ed.D., vice president of Academic and Student Affairs.

“I am thrilled to have Terri on our staff,” Miksa said. “Her past experience in workforce development will be especially valuable to MCC. I look forward to her continuing the excellent work of our Workforce and Community Development Division.”

Berryman earned her doctorate in Higher Education from Loyola University in Chicago, her Master of Arts in Human Resource Management from Truman State University and a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Western Kentucky University. She lives in Gurnee.

Halloween Concert Coming Sunday

Come, if you dare, to a joint Halloween concert with the McHenry County College Concert Band and the Cary-Grove High School Band at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27 in the Cary-Grove High School Gym, 2208 Three Oaks Road in Cary.

The concert will feature more than 200 musicians who will perform seasonally dramatic music. Program highlights include “Chant and Savage Dance,” “The Witch and the Saint,” Ghost Riders in the Sky,” and two combined bands numbers: “Procession of the Sorcerers” and “Hocus Pocus.”

"Take Back The Night"

"Take Back the Night," sponsored by the Student Peace Action Network will be  this evening, Wednesday April 11th. Join us in illuminating the darkness surrounding sexual violence starting at 5:30 pm in the MCC commons area with an information and resource fair.

Guest speakers will present important information in the Conference Center at 6:30 p.m. followed by a march to the Peace Pole for a special vigil complete with glow sticks.

International GIS Day Celebration Wednesday At MCC

On Wednesday, November 16th, McHenry County will celebrate International GIS Day. International GIS Day provides a worldwide forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society.  More than 80 countries will participate in holding local events such as corporate open houses, hands-on workshops, community expos, school assemblies, and more.

GIS empowers McHenry County to integrate digital information with maps as tools for decision making.  McHenry County will be showcasing how it uses GIS throughout County departments to improve public safety, reduce staff time, manage resources more efficiently, improve decision making, and provide better information to the public.

Workshop On Assisting At-Risk Youth

McHenry County College will host Latino author Robert Renteria Jr., who will present a community workshop about assisting at-risk underrepresented youth, from 10:20 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 23 in Room A115 at the college, 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.

The workshop is held in conjunction with the Latino student Empowerment Conference and will focus on how organizations can support and partner with each other to help youth reach and overcome obstacles to reach their goals.

Renteria, businessman turned author, will share personal stories from his memoir, “From

the Barrio to the Board Room,”  including how he grew up in an impoverished East Los Angeles barrio and abandoned by his drug and alcohol-addicted father. As a teenager, he dropped out of high school and went from one dead-end job to another until he had a life-changing realization and resolved to start making better life choices. After honorably serving seven years in the U.S. Army, he moved to Chicago and eventually landed a position as vice president of a company. He currently makes a living speaking to organizations throughout the country.

6:00 p.m. – McHenry County Conservation District Board Meeting --

In the Brookdale Administrative Offices, 18410 U.S. Highway 14, Woodstock.—

The Board will go into executive session to handle matters permitted under the Open Meetings Law.

The meeting is to reconvene immediately following the closed session or at 7:00 p.m. Following consideration of Land Ethic Goal #6 the meeting will continue.

“A conservation ethic is an attitude that recognizes the importance of preserving the natural heritage of the county’s open space.”

Reports are expected from the various committees along with reports from commissioners and others who attended various conferences and meetings.

A Memorandum of Understanding between the McHenry County Conservation District, McHenry County Division of Transportation and the United States Army Corps of Engineers for wetland mitigation at Glacial Park Conservation Area is being presented for approval.

Seven citizens are being appointed to the Citizens’ Advisory Committee effective September 1, 2011 with terms as follows: Mark Healy, Jim Albright, and Bob Paine 2011-2012; Beverly Dow, Elaine Ramesh and Christine Grimm 2011 to 2013; Adrienne Burman, Charles Dubsky and Tim Scotellaro, 2011-2014.

In addition to handling the necessary approval of minutes and payment of vouchers, the Board is receiving a Safety Committee meeting report, considering consent agenda items of requests from Lakeside Legacy-Arts in the Parks for use of the “triangle” and Main Beach parking lot for their Fall Festival Event October 14-16.

The Knights of Columbus is requesting to solicit donations during their annual Tootsie Roll Drive in the Lippold Park parking lots on Friday and Saturday, September 16 and 17. 

Park District staff has developed vision and mission statements for each division of the Park District, which is being presented to the Board for review.

A referendum time table is also being presented to the Board for consideration for the recreation center.
