Upcoming Opportunity For Voting

The next opportunity to have a say in government is March 20 when the Illinois General Primary Election takes place.

In order to participate in this important event, voters must be registered to vote. County Clerk Katherine C. Schultz explains that a state law allows a “Grace Period” for voter registration. It began February 22 and will continue through March 13 for the March 20 General Primary Election.

Individuals may register in person during normal office hours at the clerk’s office, County Administration Building, 667 Ware Road, Room 107, Woodstock.

However, people who register to vote during this period must vote in the County Clerk’s Office at the time they register. People who register during the “grace period” are not eligible to vote at their precinct polling place on March 20^th.

The official deadline to register to vote was February 21^st.

To be eligible to vote, a person must be a US citizen, 18 years old by Election Day, and a resident of the precinct for at least 30 days prior to Election Day. Two (2) forms of ID are necessary both with their name and one (1) with their current address.

Want To Vote March 20--But Not Registered To Vote--See Below

Today is the first day registered voters who expect to be absent from their county of residence on Election Day (March 20) may make application by mail or in person for an official ballot.

This application is to be made with the County Clerk of the County in which the voter resides. For McHenry County that is the office of County Clerk Katherine Schultz, located in the County Administration Building, 667 Ware Road, Woodstock.

Early voting will begin February 27 at various locations in the County. These are listed on the County Clerk’s website.

Last Day To File Nominating Petitions

Today is the final day for filing of nominating petitions for offices to be considered by voters in the Tuesday, March 20 Primaries.

Katherine C. Schultz, McHenry County Clerk has issued notice that a Simultaneous Filing Lottery will be conducted Monday, December 12 at 10 a.m. in her office located at the County Administration Building, 667 Ware Road, Woodstock.

The lottery is being held to determine ballot placement for the candidates to be listed on the Republican ballot for the March 20, 2012 Primary election.

All the candidates involved filed at the same time on the first day for filing nominating petitions in hopes of being listed first on the ballot.

New Filing Date For US House of Representative Candidate Petitions

The filing dates for candidates seeking voter consideration for a United States House of Representatives seat has been modified.

Friday, December 23, 2011, 8:00 a.m. is the first day to file for candidates seeking the office of Representative in the U.S. Congress with January 4, 2012, 5:00 p.m. as the last day for filing objections to the nominating petitions for candidates who have filed for the office of Representative.

Any candidate who attempts to file petitions sooner will have their petitions rejected.

This is due to the revamping of the congressional districts which resulted in the filing of a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The original map was the result of the one political party having the power to determine the new boundaries.

Preparations For An Important Day--March 20, 2012

Signatures on nominating petitions are underway for the next election which is March 20—a Presidential Preference Primary for the President of the United States, as well as other offices.

Other offices to which candidates are to be nominated include McHenry County Offices and County Board members; Representatives in Congress – all 18 Districts (Illinois has one less member to nominate due to a shift downward in the population); 59 State Senators.
