Research
has shown that there can be a connection between the abuse of prescription
medications and heroin abuse. A great way for community members to do their
part in the fight against drug addiction is to safely dispose of unused,
unwanted prescription medications.
This event
gives community members the opportunity to clean out their medicine
cabinets. Investigations reveal that medications are taken from family
and friends houses, in thefts and burglaries, and other unsecured
locations. Medications taken can be used by that person or sold to
someone who plans to abuse a medication not prescribed to them. Collected
medications are then turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
where they will be safely and permanently disposed. No liquids or needles
can be collected at this event.
The Sheriff's Office will be hosting a
collection site at the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District- East side Fire
Station.
