Women’s Education, Empowerment Theme of Women’s History Month Events at MCC
In celebration of Women’s History Month, McHenry County College is hosting two public events, following the theme of Women’s Education, Women’s Empowerment, with a women’s expo on March 14 and a lunchtime concert on March 21 featuring women of the MCC music faculty.
The Empowering Women Expo: Wives, Daughters, Sisters…You from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 14 in the MCC Atrium (Building A) will feature informational resources and vendors focusing on health, family care, money management, personal enrichment, and self improvement.
Speakers will be featured every hour including:
- 10 a.m., Vicky Smith, Ed.D., MCC president, “Student Success;”
- 11 a.m., Ann Esarco, Ph.D., MCC accounting instructor, “MCC and Opportunities for Education;”
- 12 p.m. Frances Mai-Ling, MCC alumna, “How MCC Transformed My Life;”
- 1 p.m., Catherine Jones, executive director of Shah Center programs, “MCC’s Shah Center and Opportunities for Women.”
“We wanted to offer an expo for women because education is the first and most important part of a woman’s agency; without it, she isn’t aware of the world, its opportunities, or the choices she can make for herself,” said Kate Midday, Women’s History Month Committee chair.
Participating organizations include: MCC’s Children’s Learning Center, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Clinic, Alzheimer’s Association, McHenry County Department of Health, Centegra Sage Center, Consumer Credit Counseling Services, MCC Fitness Center, Women in Business, Faith in Action, AmeriCorps of McHenry County, Women in Management, Worldwide Traveler, Centegra Healthbridge, Centegra Physicians and MCC faculty and alumni.
Other highlights include a personal-assistance station to help people fill out taxes and drawings for gift baskets, gift cards and other prizes.
“Music Empowers Women,” a concert featuring instrumental and vocal performances by women of the MCC music faculty and guest musicians takes place from noon to 1 p.m. on March 21 in the MCC Employee Dining Room. Performances include a classical trio, a brass duet, jazz piano and folk and blues. Musicians include MCC music faculty Pat Gaughan, Janet Kvam-Holub, Ph.D., Paige Lush, Ph.D., and Tara Singer. Special guest musicians Lisa Lithall, Katie Willcockson and Judith Williamson, Ph.D., will perform music composed by women.
Both events are free and open to the public. For more information about Women’s History Month events, visit www.mchenry.edu/women.
