To protect yourself and those around you, the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) recommends anyone 6 months of age and older should get a yearly flu shot. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for your body to develop an immune response. Flu season usually begins in October and can last until May.
McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) has scheduled appointment-only flu clinics for adults and children over 9 years of age at the following times:
Thurs Sept 29 • 8:45am-11:45am, Woodstock (2200 N Seminary Ave), Bldg A
Sat Oct 1 • 8:45am-11:45am, Crystal Lake (100 N Virginia St), Community Room
Mon Oct 3 • 3pm-6pm, Woodstock (2200 N Seminary Ave), Bldg A
The vaccine is thimerosal-free and costs $30; Medicaid and Medicare Part B are accepted. Appointments can be made online at www.mcdh.info or by phone 815-334-4510. Walk-ins are also welcomed.
Influenza is highly contagious respiratory illness which even healthy people can get. High risk individuals include pregnant women, adults 65 and older, children younger than 5 years old and those with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, and heart and lung disease. Vaccination is also important for healthcare workers, school employees and childcare providers who care for high risk individuals.
A good way to reduce spreading the flu virus is to cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, washing hands frequently and staying home when you are sick. For more information on the flu, visit http://www.cdc.gov/flu.
