Cholesterol Screening -- Greenwood Township -- Thursday, April 10

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) will offer a cholesterol screening at Greenwood Township, 5211 Miller Road, Wonder Lake, on Thursday, April 10, from 7am-9am.  Appointments are required at 815-334-4851.  The cost is $35.  The screening requires a 12-hour fast and includes total cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, blood pressure and cardiovascular education.
Why is cholesterol important? High cholesterol has a lot to do with your chances of getting heart disease.  Although it usually has no signs or symptoms, it can be treated. In fact, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes are all major risk factors for heart disease.  Certain lifestyles such as being a smoker, being overweight and lack of exercise can also put people at a higher risk for developing heart disease. Everyone can take steps to lower their risk of heart disease and heart attack by addressing these risk factors.
By quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight, you can keep blood cholesterols down. For more information on cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at http://www.cdc.gov/heartdisease/what_you_can_do.htm.

April 7-13 Is National Public Health Week

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) will join communities around the country in celebrating April 7-13 as National Public Health Week (NPHW) to draw attention to the need to help protect and improve the nation’s health.  Since 1995, communities from across the country have celebrated NPHW each April to draw attention to the need to help protect and improve the nation’s health.
This year’s theme is "Public Health: Start Here”. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states seven in ten deaths in the U.S. are related to preventable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. Only three percent of health care dollars go toward prevention while 75 percent of health care dollars are spent on treating such diseases.
“We need to recognize that improving our nation’s health can be done with small changes to our daily routine,” said Patrick J. McNulty, MCDH’s Public Health Administrator.  “We can all make a difference in helping people live healthier and longer lives.”  NPHW messages will be focused on --
Monday, April 7th – Be Healthy from the Start: From maternal health and school nutrition to emergency preparedness, public health starts at home.
Tuesday, April 8th – Don’t Panic: Disaster preparedness starts with community-wide commitment and action.
Wednesday, April 9th – Get Out Ahead: Prevention is now a nationwide priority.
Thursday, April 10th – Eat Well: The system that keeps our nation's food safe and healthy is complex.
Friday April 11th – Be the Healthiest Nation in One Generation: Best practices for community health come from around the globe.

Two McHenry County College (MCC) students won top awards in the 2014 Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Juried Art Exhibit hosted by MCC through April 8 in Gallery One and Gallery Two in the MCC Library. The college is located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.
Award winners include: Best of Show, Molly Tait of McHenry, for her untitled ceramics and Award of Excellence, Shelby Page of Crystal Lake, for her untitled ceramics. Both students are among seven MCC students who had their artwork selected for the Skyway Juried Art Competition, which included 36 student artists from eight area community colleges,     including College of Lake County, Elgin Community College, McHenry County College, Moraine Valley Community College, Morton College, Prairie State College, Oakton Community College and Waubonsee Community College.
Tait earned her associate in science degree from MCC last year and she continues to take a few prerequisite art classes with plans to transfer next fall to Bell Haven University in Jackson, Mississippi to next ceramics. She works part-time in the Art Department and is involved with MCC Student Senate, where she is a student rep for the MCC Clay Club. Her award-winning entry features a trio of Chinese bronze vessel-inspired pieces that were soda fired and include Asian motifs and architectural design. One of the pieces includes movable wheel parts.
“Ceramics is my favorite class,” Tait said. “My instructor, Tom Vician, probably had the most influence on my work. He’s very open to new ideas. I like the fact that he’s always searching for new things to do and sharing them with our class. There’s always something new to learn.”
Page is in her third semester at MCC and plans to transfer next fall to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to study art. She also works part-time in the Art Department and at a local Starbucks coffee shop.
Other MCC students selected for the 2014 Skyway Art Exhibit are: Natalie Jedynak of Fox River Grove, for “Warrior,” an archival pigment print; Dallas LaCassa of Lake in the Hills, for “Goldbaum,” a stoneware, gold leaf; Mariela Ryan of Crystal Lake for “Sisters,” an archival pigment print; Joanna Sit of Crystal Lake, for “Jomana,” an oil on canvas; and Dennis Taylor of Lake Barrington, for “It’s None of Your Bismuth,” oil on canvas.

Supreme Court vs. American People

The Supreme Court seems to have a completely different vision of democracy than the American people.
Over the last four years, millions of Americans have stood up to protest the corrosive power of big money on our elections, which was made worse by the Court’s Citizens United decision and its onrush of Super PACs and mega-donors.
Today, the Supreme Court doubled down on that wrong-headed decision, and by a narrow 5-4 decision, struck down federal contribution limits to allow even more big money into our democracy.
We can’t stand for this. These decisions have to be overturned if we want to restore democratic power to the people. That’s why we’re fully committed to organize, organize, organize, until we have the people power necessary to overturn Citizens United through a constitutional amendment.
In the last presidential election, we watched a handful of mega-donors outspend huge swaths of the American public. We project that from now through the 2020 election, this new decision will bring an additional $1 billion into our elections from no more than 2,800 mega-donors.
When such a small number of people can tip the scales and make sure they are heard over the rest of our country, we are clearly not working with a level playing field. This means your voice is being drowned out.
With the highest Court bent on gutting campaign finance laws, you know this is not a fight we will win overnight, but it’s also important to know that there are solutions available that we can work to implement now.
Illinois PIRG is committed to this fight for the long haul. With your support we will work toward immediate repair and long term fights to fully fix this broken system. Right now we are working to implement a small donor empowerment program to amplify the voices of average Americans. At the same time, we are working to amend the Constitution to make sure we can put limits on big money and fundamentally restore political equality for all Americans.

“With respect to the sponsor’s intention of improving Illinois’ public health, I must state that I am against the amendment that would ban the sale of raw milk on Illinois farms.  Illinois law allows for the sale of raw milk if it is sold on the farm.  It is the position of the Illinois Farm Bureau to support the choices of consumers whom choose to purchase and consume raw milk.  I stand with the Illinois Farm Bureau and farmers in Lake and McHenry Counties to continue to leave the choice between farmers and consumers.”
