Hot Weather Affects Pets As Well As Humans

With the weather forecast calling for extreme heat over the next week, McHenry County Animal Control (MCAC) urges pet owners to take special precautions.
Dr. Lisa Lembke, MCAC’s Veterinarian Manager, offers these tips from the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) to keep your pets safe during extreme heat –
Pets can get dehydrated very quickly so give them plenty of fresh, clean water when it’s hot outdoors; also provide a shady place to get out of the sun. If at all possible, keep them indoors when it’s extremely hot.
Never leave animals in a parked vehicle – even with the windows open – as this can lead to fatal heat stroke.
Know the symptoms of overheating in pets (e.g. excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, stupor, bloody diarrhea, seizures).
Don’t let animals walk on hot asphalt. Being so close to the ground, an animal’s body can heat up quickly and sensitive paws can burn. Keep walks to a minimum.

How To Stay Cool

With temperatures expected to remain high over the next week, McHenry County Department of Health reminds residents of important health tips to ensure time spent outdoors is safe and comfortable.
Here are some tips to stay cool –
Always wear light-weight clothing that has plenty of ventilation (the fabric should “breathe”). Stay well hydrated (consume an abundance of liquids in the summer). Be sure to provide pets with water and shade when outside as well.
Exercise or schedule other strenuous activities when the heat and humidity are lowest, (early morning and late evenings).
Rest in cool, shady places frequently. If you’re hot, go cool down – get indoors, drink cool liquids, enjoy the air conditioning for a few minutes, or take a cold shower.
Watch out for those at greatest risk – very young children, persons with health conditions like the elderly, pets. Young children should never be left in cars, even for short periods of time.  Certain medications may also put you at greater risk of heat-related illnesses so be aware of how medications may interact with the heat.
During periods of extreme heat and humidity, residents should be on the lookout for these potential risk factors –
Dehydration — Dehydration occurs when more water leaves the body that you put back in. Stay well hydrated throughout the day and drink extra fluids when exercising or simply being outdoors on hot days.
Heat exhaustion — Symptoms may include: headaches, weak pulse, rapid pulse, excessive sweating, dizziness, and in some instances fainting, clammy skin, chills, cold, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps or very fast or very shallow breathing. If you suspect you have heat exhaustion, take action immediately to cool down. If possible, immerse yourself in cool water.
Heat stroke — Unlike heat exhaustion, victims of heat stroke have warm skin that is dry to the touch because they’ve sweated out all their extra water leaving the body’s natural cooling system without a key cool-down mechanism. High fever, severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, and a strong, rapid pulse all accompany heat stroke. Victims may become confused and can lose consciousness. Heat stroke is a very serious condition. Cool the victim; seek medical assistance.

Mosquito Test Found Positive For West Nile Virus

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) has reported that mosquitoes from a mosquito trap in Harvard have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV).
This is the first positive test for WNV in McHenry County since last year.  MCDH has tested 128 mosquito batches as of June 20; all other batches tested negative for WNV.
Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) indicates that as of June 19, two other counties have reported two positive mosquito batches but no human cases so far this year.  No human cases of WNV were reported in McHenry County in 2012.  Two birds have been submitted and tested with negative results.
IDPH believes that a hot summer increases mosquito activity and the risk of disease from West Nile virus.  MCDH will continue to collect and test mosquito batches throughout the remainder of the season (mid-October) and will accept a limited number of dead birds for testing.
It is important to remember that the risk of WNV remains until the first hard frost. Residents should continue to use insect repellent when going out of doors in the evening, with long sleeved shirts and long pants for extra protection.  Other tips include emptying standing water from containers around the house and making sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens.
Illness from West Nile virus is usually mild and includes fever, headache and body aches but serious illnesses, such as encephalitis and meningitis and death, are possible.
Persons 50 and older have the highest risk of severe disease.  For more information on WNV, visit www.mcdh.info (Environmental Health) or call 815-334-4585.

Beach Test Results

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) conducted beach water samplings at 38 licensed beaches on Wednesday, June 19.  There were no reports of increased bacterial levels.  All beaches will be open.
To prevent illness associated with swimming, all licensed beaches on the 13 lakes in McHenry County are tested every 2 weeks for E. coli throughout the summer to determine water quality.  Additional and more frequent sampling is done when elevated bacterial levels are found.
Water sampling results are reported to the appropriate beach authorities. MCDH will post an advisory or closed signage for beaches with elevated E. coli results.  All beach water results and locations are readily available at the MCDH webpage www.mcdh.info (click Environmental Health, quick links, “beach testing results”) or call 815-334-4585

McHenry County College Is Changing

Actually the change is the configuration of the campus. But it is only slightly. Due to the availability of property located to the north of the current campus, known as the Gilger property, a plan in the making for some time is about to be completed.
The former residents of the 20-acre farm property located at 9010 Northwest Highway, died and this is an opportune time for MCC to obtain the additional land and make some reconfiguration of the current campus.
There was a waiting period to reach this goal, but it seems that nothing worthwhile is obtained without some slight impediments. The owners of the property have offered MCC the property for $1 million for the 20 acres
MCC Board voted to accept the offer by the owners of the property for the purchase.
With this property being added to the campus currently located on US. Highway 14 and adjoining this property, the plan is to move the main entrance to the MCC campus to Lucas Road, which extends westward from US Highway 14. Currently the property has the appearance of being a part of the MCC campus, but is not owned by MCC.
A legal matter regarding the property was to go to trial last November. An offer was made to sell the property to MCC for $1million. The College will accept the offer subject to Bankruptcy Court decision.
The planned purchase also must be approved by Illinois Community College Board when obtaining property through condemnation.
MCC Board Attorney Daniel Curran was authorized by MCC Board action to represent the board for the purchase of this parcel of property.

Words Of Wisdom

"There is a rank due to the United States, among nations, which will be withheld, if not absolutely lost, by the reputation of weakness. If we desire to avoid insult, we must be able to repel it; if we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known that we are at all times ready for war."

July 31 Deadline To Register For GED Test For This Year

Anyone who plans to take a GED test in McHenry County this year must register and pay for the GED test in person by July 31 or will need to wait until a new test comes out in January 2014.
Test takers must register and pay $50 in person at the Regional Office of Education in Woodstock, located in the McHenry County Government Center, 2200 North Seminary Avenue (Route 47) in Woodstock. After registering, test takers must also sign up for a testing date in person at McHenry County College, 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake. The last testing date for new testers at McHenry County College is Oct. 5 and for re-testers, the deadline is mid-December.
“Another option for students who do not take the current paper and pencil test by Oct. 5 is to take the test on computer until mid-December at Elgin Community College (ECC),” said Sherry May, coordinator of Adult Education instruction at MCC.
The current test is being replaced with a computer-based test on Jan. 2, 2014, which will have a longer writing time (from 45 minutes to 90 minutes) and will cost $120, instead of the current $50.
As an incentive to get more test takers to take a computer-based GED test, the GED Testing Service is offering students an opportunity to begin their GED test on computer with one free retake if they fail their first test. The offer is part of the Second Shot program, which has been extended through August 31 at selected sites throughout the state. The closest site for McHenry County area GED test takers is Elgin Community College. Computer-based testing fees are $24 per test with payment by credit or debit only. Beginning in 2014, tests will be $30 each. Currently, the computer-based test is not available at McHenry County College.
According to the GED Testing Service, the pass rate for adults who take the GED test on computer was 88 percent compared with 71 percent for those who tested on paper. In addition, the average completion time for computer-based test takers is 5.5 hours compared to 7.5 hours for testing on paper, according to the testing service.
Test takers who are taking the computer-based test can register for up to two tests at a time. Test takers will be given an ID number that they need to save. Most people receive their test results before they leave the ECC testing Center, May said.
ECC is a pilot site for the computer-based GED testing this year and is available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays through the summer. Beginning in the fall, computer-based testing at ECC will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays.
Registration for computer-based testing is done only online at www.GEDtestingservice.com. For more information, contact the Regional Office of Education at (815) 334-4475 or Sherry May at MCC, at (815) 479-7568.

Reminder -- Deadline Approaching For Storm Damage Financial Help

The last day for McHenry County residents to register for Individual Assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is  Tuesday, July 9th.  County residents affected by the severe storms, straight line winds, or flooding during the period of April 16th  to May 5th, 2013 are strongly urged to call or go online to register for disaster assistance from FEMA.

“Registering is an important way to help get affected individuals on the path to recovery. All those who have been affected by the severe weather need to register for disaster assistance with FEMA. If you do not register by the deadline (Tuesday, July 9th), Federal assistance programs WILL NOT be available to you.  Even if you have insurance or you think you do not need assistance at this time, this registration is important. There are programs available to fill the gap between now and the time you and your insurance company reach a settlement. If insurance denies or only partially covers your claim and you end up having to rely on just Federal assistance, you still must be registered with FEMA prior to July 9th to be eligible,” stated County Board Chairwoman Tina R. Hill.

Affected residents and business owners have several ways to apply.
Individuals can call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- and hearing- impaired. If you use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services (VRS), call 1-800-621-3362.
Another option is to register online at:  www.disasterassistance.gov or via web-enabled phone or tablet at m.fema.gov.

The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. CST, seven days a
week.

McHenry County was one of 25 Illinois counties to receive a federal disaster declaration that offers Individual assistance to affected County residents.
If you have questions about FEMA assistance, call 1-800-320-FEMA (3362). You can also visit www.disasterassistance.gov or www.fema.gov.
