More Than 480,000 Deaths Per Year in USA Caused by Cigarettes

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States and more than 5 million deaths per year worldwide. By 2030, using current trends, more than 8 million deaths per year worldwide will be attributed to tobacco use.
McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) joins the World Health Organization in recognizing May 31 as World No Tobacco Day. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death.  Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases (including emphysema, bronchitis, and chronic airway obstruction), and diabetes.
Residents who want to quit smoking can sign up for a seven-week quit smoking class offered by MCDH and Centegra Health System.  The next class begins Wednesday, July 9 from 6pm-7:30pm at Centegra McHenry Hospital, 4201 W Medical Center Drive in McHenry.  Instruction is provided by MCDH staff that is trained in the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking® program. This program is considered the “gold standard” and has helped tens of thousands of smokers quit over the last 30 years. MCDH reports between 70%-75% of class participants have quit smoking by the end of the program, when used in combination with smoking cessation medication.
A $25 course fee, payable at the first class, is refundable if all sessions are attended. Class members will also receive a free 3-day pass to Centegra’s Health Bridge Fitness Center. To register, call MCDH at 815-334-4525 or 1-877-CENTEGRA. To speak to a counselor, call 1-866-QUIT-YES.

New Limitations On State's Freedom of Information Act

The Chicago Headline Club is dismayed by the quick action taken by the Illinois legislature on HB 3796, which puts new limitations on the state's Freedom of Information Act.
In essence, the bill, if signed by Gov. Pat Quinn, "...adds provisions to the Freedom of Information Act to create a category of requests called “Voluminous Requests.” This is in addition to the other provisions in the FOIA that enable public bodies to negotiate FOIA requests, which are the recurrent requester provision and the unduly burdensome provision.
What it does is add another barrier that blocks transparency by public agencies.
The Chicago Headline Club urges Gov. Quinn to veto the measure so that Illinois residents can have open access to public records and proceedings at open meetings.
"This bill does little to enhance and preserve transparency by public agencies," Fernando Diaz, president of the Chicago Headline Club, said. "It is imperative that Gov. Quinn maintain a posture of open and transparent government by vetoing this bill."

Medical Marijuana War Ended

Congress just voted to end the federal government’s war on medical marijuana!

During a debate regarding a Justice Department funding bill, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), a longtime MPP ally, offered an amendment intended to block DEA raids on medical marijuana dispensaries. It passed by a surprisingly wide margin — 219-189. The amendment will not become law until it is signed by the president, but we’re well on our way.
MPP played a key role in building support for this measure, and we couldn’t have done it without our supporters.

We have had a lot of victories since MPP was founded in 1995, but this is one of the biggest — not just in the organization’s history, but in the history of the marijuana policy reform movement.

We worked with Congressman Rohrabacher and former Congressman Maurice Hinchey on this amendment for more than a decade, and our lobbying presence in Congress has never been stronger. This year alone, we met with staffers from more than 100 congressional offices, as well as dozens of members in person.
