Explore McHenry County Ancient Oak Woodlands

Be among the only humans ever to explore several of McHenry County’s ancient oak woodlands that are not open to the public with a trip offered by McHenry County College’s Trips and Tours program from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 17.
Participants will visit some of the area’s oldest living residents, including a 400 year-old white oak that native Potawatomi Indians likely sat beneath. One highlight is to view gorgeous spring wildflowers in their natural setting and an opportunity to speak with private landowners about the oak woodlands that they own and cherish. The tour will also include a visit to one of the largest remaining oak woodlands in the county – site of the brand new Community Research Forest, a public-private partnership that will become a center of study, training and educational opportunities about oak woodland ecology, health and care. The trip will take place in rain or shine. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes for hiking on unpaved trails over gently rolling terrain.
Cost is $79 and includes lunch. Use trip ID: NST S23 005 when registering.

Cholesterol Screening -- May 22

Appointments are still available for a cholesterol screening, sponsored by the McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH), on Thursday, May 22, from 9am-11am, at Harvard-Diggins Library, 900 E McKinley Street, Harvard.  Appointments are required at 815-334-4851.  The cost is $35.  The screening requires a 12-hour fast and includes total cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, blood pressure, heart age assessment and cardiovascular education.  A nursing consult is available once results are received.
Why is cholesterol important? High cholesterol has a lot to do with your chances of getting heart disease.  Although it usually has no signs or symptoms, it can be treated. In fact, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes are all major risk factors for heart disease.  Certain lifestyles such as being a smoker, being overweight and lack of exercise can also put people at a higher risk for developing heart disease. Everyone can take steps to lower their risk of heart disease and heart attack by addressing these risk factors.
By quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight, you can keep blood cholesterols down. For more information on cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at http://www.cdc.gov/heartdisease/what_you_can_do.htm.
