Recall Of Stainless Steel Flasks By U.S. Food and Drug Administration

McHenry County Department of Health has received a recall notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for stainless steel flasks due to possible lead risk. Laboratory results revealed that brandy stored in the flask under certain conditions may show elevated levels of lead.  This voluntary recall only involves stainless steel flasks manufactured by E&J Brandy and sold in gift sets in 2006-2010.  Prolonged exposure to elevated levels of lead may have negative health effects.  This recall does not pertain to any bottles of E&J Brandy.

The affected flasks are silver, rectangular in shape, and have “E&J VSOP” etched on the front.  Gift sets were sold throughout the United States in a variety of retail stores as recently as this past season.  Some flasks in leather cases were also given away as a promotional item in 2007.  Officials at E&J Brandy recommend consumers call 1-866-959-8477 at any time for instructions on how to return this product for a full refund.  The brandy contained in the gift set is unaffected and may be safety consumer but any brandy or other liquid in the flask should not be consumed.  Photos of the product can be found at http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm245055.htm

Recalls are posted on MCDH’s webpage at www.mcdh.info.  For more information on recalls, contact MCDH’s Environmental Health Division at 815-334-4585.
