Columbus Day Not Celebrated Everywhere

Monday is Columbus Day and a holiday for many. However, there are a number of areas in the country where the day is not celebrated.

This is the day considered as the discovery of the country. However, it is also considered that the settlement of the Americas led to the death of a very large proportion of native peoples. Also others point out that Columbus never reached the mainland of what is now the United States but reached islands in the Caribbean. Therefore, it is argued Columbus cannot be credited with the discovery of America.

Although Illinois is one of the states celebrating Columbus Day, there are some states not recognizing the celebration. These include California, Nevada, and Hawaii. Native Americans Day is celebrated in South Dakota while Indigenous People's Day is celebrated in Berkley, CA.

Early Voting Ongoing Regardless of Columbus Day
Since Illinois does celebrate, government offices are closed, schools are closed, and many banks are closed. However, McHenry County Government Center is closed for business, but Early Voting is taking place in the building.
