Cardiovascular Screening Woodstock Public Library -- Wednesday February 10

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) is sponsoring a cardiovascular screening at the Woodstock Public Library in recognition of American Heart Month.  The screening will take place from 9:00AM-11:00AM, Wednesday, February 10 at the Woodstock Public Library, 414 West Judd Street.  Appointments can be made online at www.mcdh.info or by calling 815-334-4852

The screening requires a 12-hour fast and includes total cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, blood pressure, heart age assessment and cardiovascular education. The cost is $45. A nursing consult is available once results are received at no additional cost.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 71 million Americans have high cholesterol. Only one out of every three adults with high cholesterol has the condition under control. Having high cholesterol puts you at risk for cardiovascular disease (includes heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure) which is the #1 killer of women and men in the United States. Certain lifestyles such as being a smoker, being overweight and lack of exercise can also put people at a higher risk for developing heart disease.

If you have high cholesterol, there are no signs or symptoms but it is treatable. Getting your cholesterol checked once every 5 years keeps you knowledgeable about any changes in your levels. It is important to discuss your cholesterol levels with your doctor in order to develop the best plan for your health.

Chili Open Golf Classic and Pond Hockey Tournament Cancelled

After careful review of the existing ice conditions at Main Beach and discussions on what would be needed to safely prepare a golf course and ice rinks for the Chili Open Golf Classic and the 4 X 4 Pond Hockey Tournament, it was decided to cancel both events for this year. 

Any registered teams will receive a full refund. Both events will be included in the 2017 winter program plan with a possible expansion for the 4 X 4 Pond Hockey Tournament to include a date for teams under age 18. For more information contact the Crystal Lake Park District at (815) 459-0680.

Over $1 Million Recovered In Drug Asset Forfeitures

Louis A. Bianchi, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that in cooperation with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department and the DEA, the property located at 9672 Bennington Drive, Huntley, IL was determined to be subject to forfeiture under the provisions of the Controlled Substances Act or the Cannabis Control Act. The property had an estimated value of $209,118.00. An additional property located at 10123 Ashley Street, Huntley, IL, was also the subject of asset forfeiture and had an estimated total value of $46,233.00.

Under the forfeiture laws, prosecutors file civil actions in court seeking an order to forfeit property seized related to drug crimes. The forfeited assets are sold and the forfeited money is distributed, according to State law, among State law enforcement agencies. In this case, $33,481.94 was distributed to the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office as their share of the forfeited proceeds. The forfeited money is deposited in a drug asset forfeiture account, and pursuant to law, is used for substance abuse treatment and educational programs, and for detecting, investigating, apprehending and prosecuting people for drug crimes.

During the 2015 Multi-Juris Drug Grant year, over one million dollars have been recovered in drug asset forfeitures.

These cases were prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Randi Freese of the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Information About Engineering As a Career

Graduating high school seniors who are thinking about engineering as a career are welcome to attend an information night about McHenry County College’s Engineering Pathways program at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 in Room B166-167.

MCC has teamed up with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) that allows automatic admission into the university’s College of Engineering for qualified students.

UIUC representatives will be available to discuss the process for the new Engineering Pathways program and answer question.

People In Need Forum -- January 30

The 2016 People in Need Forum will be held on Saturday, January 30, from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM at McHenry County College. 

The Forum is a unique opportunity for volunteers and staff of human service, business, government, civic and faith-based organizations to learn about important community resources, as well as an invitation to those wishing to learn more for themselves and their families.

MCC Second Sunday Concert January 10

McHenry  County  College’s  popular  Second  Sunday  concert season  continues  at 3 p.m. 

Jan. 10, 2016 when folksingers February Sky return with their multi-instrumental professional folk act. The performance will be in the Luecht Conference Center at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.

 

February Sky, of Trout Lake, Michigan, features traditional singer and Celtic guitarist Phil Cooper with songwriter and singer Susan Urban.  Their combined talents on guitar, Cooper sings and plays his own arrangements of traditional songs and tunes on six string guitar and cittern, and he also interprets a number of carefully chosen songs from the best of modern folk song writers. Susan Urban is a writer of story songs and humorous "slice of life" songs.  She accompanies her singing on guitar, six string banjo, mountain dulcimer, and hand percussion instruments.  Also featured will be Joe Wadz on mandolin and fiddle.

February Sky presents a combination of old and new songs addressing the widest possible range of human experience, complete with vocal harmony, intricate instrumentation and thoughtful stagecraft.
